Patrick Heeks, Charlotte Downey and Macey French from Pershore Swimming Club travelled to Nuneaton at the weekend to compete in Nuneaton & Bedworth Spring 2014 Open Meeting, producing a string of excellent performances between them and smashing personal bests.

The Nuneaton Open Meet is acknowledged as one of the region’s toughest Open Meets, attracting swimmers from some of the Midland’s biggest clubs including the likes of Boldmere, City of Coventry and City of Leicester.

Heeks (10) was in superb form, winning two silver medals in the boys 10 year old category and claiming his first ever Midlands Qualifying Time.  Heeks produced a personal best of 1.20.67 in the boys 10 year old 100m backstroke to snatch silver and ensure his place at the Midlands District Swimming Championships in June later this year.  He also added a second silver in the boys 10 year old 100m freestyle, producing another massive pb time of 1.11.63 and just missing out on another MQT.  The final event for Heeks saw him win a bronze medal in the boys 50m fly with a time of 38.45.

Downey, who has just turned 11 and moving up an age category, found herself up against some formidable opposition and produced a string of personal bests. Downey had strong swims in both sprint and longer distance events, with personal bests in the 100m backstroke in 1.27.66, the 100m freestyle in 1.18.51, 200m breaststroke in 3.32.50 and 200m backstroke in 3.30.80.  She also clocked 46.21 in the 50m breaststroke and 42.41 in the 50m fly which were narrowly outside her previous best times.

French also swam well against good opposition in the girls 10 year old age group, producing times of 1.31.56 in the 100m backstroke, 51.77 in the 50m breaststroke and 42.23 in the 50m fly.
