Pershore Pairing take Gloucester by storm.

In a most awe inspiring display of swimming talent two Pershore swimmers took the City of Gloucester by storm when competing in their recent top tier Open Meet.

In his penultimate swim in the nine year old age group Tyler Mclean from Charlton

set about his task in fine style with a personal best (pb) and a comfortable win in his first event the 50m breaststroke with 43.48 an improvement of two seconds leaving Mclean ranked 1st in the UK's by more than 2 seconds over his nearest rival and even more spectacular the 3rd best for a nine year old of all time both for end of year rankings.   In the 200m backstroke once again Mclean made a four second improvement recording 3.16.08 and taking the silver medal.

The 200m Individual Medley (IM) is a grueling event demanding swimming 50m in each of the four strokes but with another four second pb with 3.12.85 and another silver medal (11th in the UK) with one event left on the first day being the 50m backstroke Mclean secured his third silver to go with his gold with a time of 43.71.

This left ten year old Tazmin Pugh to match her club mate's superb performances and with a three second pb in the 200m free wining with a time of 2.32.66 and 3rd in the UK rankings it started well.  Pugh followed this up with another win in the 50m free with a

new pb of 32.30  again 3rd in the UK also lying 11th in the all time best list for a ten year old with three months still left to improve on that.

Pugh seldom wins a breaststroke event but taking the 200m breaststroke by storm consolidated a recent improvement with 3.25.82.  In the final event of the day Pugh set another pb swimming 36.31 in the 50m fly leaving her with a ranking of 2nd in the UK plus on the day four wins from four races.

On the second day the Pershore pair swam even better with Mclean starting off with a 2nd placing just behind his nemesis Lucas Dewe from Ledbury in the 200m free but with an outstanding eleven second pb of 2.53.34.  With another 2nd place and pb in the 50m free of 36.44 Mclean desperately wanted two wins in his last two events in his bid to be Top Boy in the nine year old division from the entire weekend.  A four second pb and 3.25.94 in the 200m breaststroke (1st in the UK) and another pb and a time of 44.08 in the 50m fly he did indeed win those gold medals.

Pugh was not to be outdone and secured five more victories from her five races on the second day with a great new seven second pb in the 400m freestyle event in a time of 5.18.91 pushing her up to 2nd in the UK and just one second short of a District Qualifying time for next June.  There was a two second improvement for her 50m breaststroke time with 44.07 (9th in the UK) and another surprising win, whilst a first in the 200m back was somewhat more expected where she was already 1st in the UK rankings but achieved her aim in gaining her first District time eight months ahead of schedule and in fact only 8 seconds short of qualifying for the National Age group championships next July it being the first year she will be allowed to compete.

A three second pb and victory in the 200m IM of 2.53.96 (4th in UK) and a fine win in the 50m back 36.66 (1st in UK) left Pugh holding nine gold medals from nine events her most outstanding performance yet at an important Open Meet.  Even this was topped by being presented with the Top Girl trophy. Meanwhile club mate Mclean just missed out on the Top Boy Trophy by an agonising one point but taking home three gold and five silver medals being the best results in an Open Meet any boy has achieved from Pershore Swimming Club.  Even with only two members swimming they accumulated 131 pts and entered the top ten listings in the team competition only bettered by clubs some sporting more than 30 members competing over the weekend.
