Top Boy and Top Girl for Pershore Swimmers

In the annual prestigious City of Gloucester Open Meet at the weekend five youngsters from Pershore Swimming Club came away setting twenty four new personal bests (pb's) three new Midland (MQT) and one National Qualifying times, together with top boy and top girl age group titles.

Twelve year old Lizzie Vizard swam on the Saturday and set two new pb's, the first in the 200m free (2.42.35) whilst her second came in the 100m back (1.22.65).   Setting his first Midland Qualifying time was Joseph Doyle who Head Coach Tom Naughton stated "swam one of the best performances of the day" with 2.51.21 this also allows Doyle to swim the 100m back in the Midland Age group Championships in June.  Doyle continued to impress when swimming to another great 4 secs pb in the 100m free with 1.13.68 and a 3 secs pb in the 200m free and yet another in the 200m IM with 3.02.08 finishing the day by taking gold in the 50m back event with 38.93.

Harry Sykes (13) set some brilliant pb's in many of his events the outstanding ones being a 10 secs improvement in the 200m free (2.22.67) 5 secs pb in the 200m Individual Medley (IM  2.41.63) a 4 secs pb in the 100m free (1.05.62) a 5 secs pb in the 200m breast (2.55.59) and a 6 secs pb in the 100m breast (1.20.28) finishing on a high with another sub 30 sec in the 50m free (29.54).

With Tyler McLean entering eight events he was primarily interested in making another Midland QT, the first of these came when he swam superbly to improve on his pb by 30 secs in the 400m free with 5.39.06 and became the first of his 3 gold medals of the weekend. The other golds coming in his best events the 50m and 200m breaststroke where he remained untouchable. McLean added to his five Midland times in the 200m IM when taking gold with 3.02.72.   Another 5 secs improvement in the 200m back (3.00.15) allowed him to start amassing his 59pts with 8pts for a win and 7pts for 2nd etc and taking the top 10 year old boy 'Top Boy' trophy in style.

Pershore's fifth member was Tazmin Pugh age (11), who having already qualified in ten events in the Midlands Age Group Championships had her eyes set on National times.  In her first swim in the 200m free she didn't make any headway, though edged a little nearer in the 100m back with 1.14.05 to come within 0.8 secs of the National QT which she can have another go when competing at the Midlands Champs in June.  Taking gold medals in all her remaining 50m sprint events and also the 100m fly on the first day she returned on the Sunday to try in her best event the 200m backstroke.  Setting off in fine style and unable to feel her legs after the first 50m she dug in and achieved her goal of a National Championships QT by 1.6 secs with 2.34.40.  With a 7.5 secs improvement in the 400m free she once again closed to within 4.5 secs of the NQT, and again in the 100m free to within 1.2 secs.

Pugh's eight gold medals and two silvers over the weekend left her "Top Girl" in her age group as well as in the event overall from all the girls aged 9 upwards amassing 78pts her nearest rival behind on 50pts.  Her new pb's over the two days improved her ranking to 1st in the UK (end of year) in the 200m back; 2nd in the 400m free; 3rd in the 100m free and maintains her top five position in the UK rankings in ten other events.  There are up to 3,000 eleven year old girls in her age group who have set times when competing in the range of events and distances so far this year.
