Pershore Swimmers Qualify for Finals.

Since the first round of the Nuneaton and District Junior League match in April Pershore Swimming Club have only had eye's on making the the finals in September. With a superb 2nd place in that leg followed by an even better result in the second in beating Tamworth by just two points and taking 1st place the club found themselves needing at least a 3rd to be in with a chance of the final.  In the 3rd leg it looked like a battle of the titans was about to ensue when taking on the all conquering Oldbury club lying at the top of the divisional points table having not lost a match yet.

It became apparent early on it would run to form with only the above two clubs contesting for 1st and 2nd places throughout the 51 events.  In the first of these Pershore set off to a great start with two first places from Tazmin Pugh (32.66) and Drew Jones (35.07) in the 10yr old 50m freestyle, quickly followed by Tyler Mclean 1st (21.10) and Beth Snape coming in 4th (31.66) in the 25m one length 9 yr breaststroke.

A 2nd place in the girls 11 yr old 4 x 25m Medley saw pb's from Laura Snape (22.19 breast), Alison Seward (18.56 fly) and Tessa Carr (17.24 free) with the boys taking 1st in place in their relay, and with pb's from Michael Evans (23.04 breast) Adam Palin (18.90 fly) and Jake Spencer (17.91 free) the club began to pile the pressure on Oldbury.   But  with Oldbury bringing out their big guns the match hoted up with Pershore having to content themselves with a run of 2nd placed finishes until the boy's 10yr and also 11yr relay teams brought the rut to an end with fine wins in quick succession.

These 1st placed swims came from Angus Jones (12/u 50m back 40.82), his brother Drew again in the 10/u 50m breast with a pb 47.09.   Drew was busy throughout the evening in the Stafford pool setting another pb when leading his 11/u 4 x 25m free relay team to victory with 16.82, matched by a pb from Callum Sanderson with 17.88 with Evans and Spencer with excellent times as well.  Drew went on in four other events sharing his team's victories in the 10/u Boys  4 x 25m Medley with an individual pb of 19.72 fly on the third leg with team mates Joseph Doyle, Mclean and Jack Betteridge.   With Drew in another 1st place finish in the 10/u free relay with Sanderson, Doyle, Betteridge and an individual 11/u 50m breast his share of gaining six 1sts and 30 pts on the night surely put him in running for Pershore's 'Swimmer of the Night'.

Mclean himself went on to record 1st place finishes in the 9yr 25m fly with a pb of 20.30 to go with his three other relays 1st  places the last one being the exciting 8 x 25m mixed cannon (4 girls & 4 boys different ages).  Harry Sykes recorded a new pb with 39.97 in the 12/u 50m breast and a pb of 31.28, later recording 1st place finishes in the 8 x 25m boys free (2 boys each age group), and as above in the final leg of the 'cannon' with 25m free pb of 14.59.

Pershore's girls were not to be outdone and set fourteen pb's themselves.  There was a 3rd place finish for 9 yr girls 4 x 25m medley with Mia De Toit recording 30 secs for the back and Jasmine Taite in great form with 23.85 for the 25m fly.  The 11/u girls 4 x free relay swam to a 2nd place finish behind Oldbury with Ella Spencer 16.77 and Lizzie Vizard 17.99 setting new pb's.  More 2nd place finishes came with 10 yr old Alison Seward in the 12/u 50m fly, Amy Weston 9yr 12m free, Amy Porter 12/u 50m free, Taite 9yr 25 back.  Taite, above, was also involved in a few 2nd place finishes in the realys of 10/u medley together with Amy Weston, Mia de Toit, and Beth Snape and 10/u free with Louise Hird, Tazmin Pugh and Indi Creed-Miles.

Tazmin Pugh recorded a 2nd place when swimming up an age in the 11/u 50m fly 36.50, being a new pb in the fly leg of the 10/u medley relay with 16.06 also gaining 1st place in the 10/u 50m back.  Rhiannon Cordiner proved her exhausting 8 hour journey from the northern tip of Scotland to make the leg did not detract from her performance with a pb of 46.69 in the 12/u 50m breast and helping two relay teams to 2nd place finishes.  Girl's Junior Club Captain Katie Sharratt set a pb in her lead off backstroke relay leg in the 4 x 25 12/u medley with 21.25 and gaining 3rd individual place in the 12/u 50m back.

All in all there were 36 pb's from team members even topping the first two rounds.  It was undoubetedly the club's best performance to date gaining more points than any previous leg totaling 258 and although not losing touch it was never going to be enough to rock the all powerful Oldbury from their pearch themselves finishing on 269.  Both clubs will meet again in the finals where if Pershore can manage not to repeat two unfortunate diqualifications in some events promotion to division 2 could be within their grasp at the first time of trying.
