Pugh Wind first Gold of Champs.

Sunday marked the first of this year's events of the Worcester and Hereford County Swimming championships.   Being allowed to swim in the long distance events for the first time Tazmin Pugh of Pershore Swimming Club set about the 32 lengths of the 800m freestyle with a determined look in her eye if not a llittle trepidation as it was only the second time she had ever swum the distance in compeition.

The first 50m she set 34.22 secs followed and quickly settled into an average of 39 seconds for the other 50m and finishing with a 36.80 recording 10:29.49.  This was a new personal best for Pugh and became the first gold medal to be awarded at this year's Championships resulting in Pugh lying in 2nd place in the short course UK end of year rankings.  Pugh will be in action again this coming Sunday at the Hereford pool in the longest distance competed for indoors being the 1500m freestyle.

Together with five of her team mates Pugh also competed for her dual recognition club of Worcester S.C. in the popular 'Worcester Winter  League' match on Saturday evening.  For the "A" team Alison Seward (11), Tyler McLean (10), Drew Jones (11) and Pugh (11) swam superbly in the first event of the evening and came home in 1st  position in the 6 x 25m Medley Relay. Pugh followed this with two individual 1st placings in the 50m free and fly events together with McLean winning the 11 and under breaststroke and Jones taking 3rd in the 50m freestyle.   The four some were joined by Harry Bamforth from Evesham club in the 6 x 25 Freestyle Relay and once again came home comfortably ahead in 1st place.  Bamforth also recorded 2nd place in his individual 50m backstroke event.

In a close fought contest with the lead changing throughout between Stourbridge "A" and Worcester "A" eventually Worcester took the victory on the night by just 6 pts recording 204 with Haden Hill coming home in 4th place with 148 pts.  Meanwhile Jack Betteridge (10) and Angus Jones (13) also swam well on the evening and helped bring the Worcester "B" home in 4th place with 131 pts against Solihull's 118 pts.
