Records broken at South Worcestershire Middle Schools Gala.

In the recent area Middle Schools Gala hosted at Evesham Leisure Centre the two local swimming clubs of Evesham S.C. and Pershore S.C. contributed to the majority of the top placings with the local schools of Abbey Park (AP); Blackminster (BM); Bredon Hill (BH); Simon de Montfort SDM); St Barnabus Drakes Broughton (StB); St Egwins (StE); and Yr 8 of Pershore High (PH) all competing for the annual trophies. It was one of the most successful galas to date with organizers Hannah Burton (Hd PE Blackminster) and Evesham Coach Jillian Biddle contributing to the well running of the event and being reflected by the eight records being set on the day with some having stood for ten years.

To set the gala under way were the yr 6 girls (11 & under) competing in the 25m front crawl with Evesham members Casarena Ferreira (BH) and Elenor Tarring (StE) taking the top two places. Emily Carsberg and Amy Cooper (both StE) both training at Evesham continuing the good form with 1st places in the 25m backstroke and 25m butterfly. In the fly Jasmine Taite came in a close 2nd only 0.5 behind with Beth Snape fellow pupil from Bredon Hill both training at the Pershore club also taking 2nd by a similar margin in the 25m breaststroke. The four St Egwins yr 6 girls of Alice Camp; Tarring; Carsberg; and Cooper went on to dominate the 4 x 1 freestyle relay just piping the previous competition record which had had been set in 2006, with a fine time of 1:13.86.

In the yr 6 boys (11/u), nine year old Simon Sweatman (11/u) swam a year up even though he is still a yr 5 pupil having been training at Pershore SC for two years took the full 6pts for Abbey Park Middle whilst swimming the 25m front crawl, to win by nearly 2 seconds and in so doing breaking the previous record set last year. Fellow nine year old Abbey Park pupil Josh Sharratt (yr 5 pupil), also swimming up a year and competing for yr 6 (Pershore SC) dominated the 25m fly race to such a degree his winning margin was over 5 secs recording a time of 19.11. Fellow swimming club member Oliver Cross (StB) recorded a valuable 4 pts with 3rdplace. A third record came in the 25m breast from Jamie West swimming for SDM being the first of their three records on the day. Taking valuable double relay pts in the yr 6 boys 4 x 1 relay Bredon Hill followed by Abbey Park (1 sec behind) with 3rd place St Egwins a further 10 secs back.

Blackminster pupil Hannah Dufty who trains at Evesham started the yr 7 girls competition with a fine win in the 25m front crawl with 16.64. Swimming for Abbey Park Middle for the first time Tazmin Pugh (yr 7; 12/u) recorded both their second 1st place and competition record of the day which previously set by National Champs swimmer Samantha Payne in 2003, Pugh swimming 15.67. Fellow club member Hope Rochell (BM) came in just under 3sec back in 2ndplace. Another record went in the 25m fly from SDM with Evesham swimmer Jasmin Lymn taking 2nd and Pershore swimmer Hannah Kenwright (StB) taking 3rd place. Beth Carter recorded Simon de Montfort's 3rdcompetition record of the day when winning the 25m breaststroke in a time of 19.16 the previous record having stood since 2002. The Blackminster girls went on to take the 4 x 1 relay in a time of 1.13.09.

For the yr 7 boys (yr 7; 12/u) Evesham swimmers Tom Perry (BH) and Harry Bamforth (BM) took the top places in the 25m front crawl and backstroke races with a record coming in the 25m fly from Owen Leeks (BM) out of Pershore with a time of 17.51 beating the previous one set in 2010. Pershore swimmers came in 2nd and 3rd being Callum Sanderson (BH) and Jack Betteridge (AP) only three hundredths separating them. Oliver Denning (BH) training at Evesham took the 25m yr 7 boys title with the Blackminster boys including Bamforth and Leeks taking the relay title in a time of 1:14.36.

In the yr 8 (13/u) races Pershore High entered the competition and immediately made a mark with Pershore swimmer Tessa Carr (PH) winning the 25m back in a time of 19.03, followed by a win for Melissa Humphreys (BH) training at Evesham in the 25m fly with 17.48, with Pershore pupil and swimmer Danielle Whitehill taking 3rd place. In the 25m breaststroke Pershore swimmers Lizzie Vizard (PH) and Laura Snape (BH) enjoyed a close match with Viazrd just taking 1st but had to set a new record to do it with 20.38 previously set in 2002. It was another close fought match in the 4 x 1 girls relay with Bredon Hill taking the title in 1:09.01 just 1sec ahead of Pershore.

For the yr 8 boys Jake Spencer (PH) from Pershore SC took 2nd place in the 25m front crawl with fellow club and school members Adam Palin and Michael Evans taking the 25m fly and breaststroke titles. It cam as no surprise Pershore High went on to win the 4 x 1 relay with 1:09.72 pressed hard by Simon de Montfort all the way but having to settle for 2nd place in the end touching out Bredon Hill in an exciting finish.

All in all and unprecedented since 2002 eight records were set on the day which bodes well for the swimming prospects in the Vale. Taking the annual school year trophies were St Egwins for year 6, Blackminster for year 7, and Pershore High for year 8.

Their strength in depth saw the Blackminster girls going on to take the 4 x 1 relay in a time of 1.13.09 touching out Simon de Montfort into 2nd by just 1.5 sec.

For the yr 7 boys (yr 7; 12/u) Evesham swimmers Tom Perry (BH) and Harry Bamforth (BM) took the top places in the 25m front crawl and backstroke races followed by Lance Locke (BH) 3rd in the back. In the 25m fly Pershore swimmer Owen Leeks (BM) set a new record time of 17.51 beating the previous one set in 2010. For the yr 8 boys Evesham swimmers Elliot Hirst (BH) taking 1stand Chris Harper (StE) in 3rd were split by Pershore club member Jake Spencer (PH) taking 2nd place points in the 25m front crawl with fellow club and school members Adam Palin and Michael Evans taking the 25m fly and breaststroke titles. By this point in the competition the competition for the yr 8 title between Bredon Hill and Pershore had reached a climax Bredon just ahead on points. The issue was settled however with Pershore High going on to win the final 4 x 1 relay with 1:09.72 and although they were pressed hard by Simon de Montfort all the way SDM had to settle for 2nd place and touching out Bredon Hill into 3rd.

All in all and unprecedented since 2002 eight records were set on the day which bodes well for the swimming prospects in the Vale. Taking the annual school year trophies were St Egwins for year 6, Blackminster for year 7, and Pershore High for year 8.
