Tazmin Pugh performs at club champs invite.

When five swimmers from Pershore Swimming Club were invited to take part in the Worcester Swimming Club Champs and for the second year running they once again proved themselves up to the challenge.

Star of the championships in the 9 year old division was Tazmin Pugh who won all five of her events on the night and in fact beat all the ten year olds in all but one. Tazmin swam her first event the 50m freestyle in a new record time of 34.38 followed with 41.09 in the 50m back; 49.52 in the 50m breaststroke. In the 50m fly an impressive performance saw the young Pershore swimmer beat all her rivals by over 5 seconds her nearest competitor being Worcester swimmer 10 year old Francesca Daniels coming 2nd with 44.25. Tazmin's final race was in the 100 Individual Medley (IM) where once again Tazmin trounced all other 9 and 10 year olds with an exhausted 1.30.04 but still 7 seconds ahead of 2nd place Daniels once again.

In the ongoing championships Tazmin is leading the 9/10 year old division, even though missing out on one of the sessions in the summer holidays, having won nine of her eleven events coming 2nd in the other two. Tazmin now has 184pts being 36 pts ahead of her nearest rival with just the long distance races in November still remaining.

Fellow club mate Alison Seward swam slightly below par on the night her best performance coming in the 50m free with 39.41 followed then by 4th place and 45.85 in the back; 48.77 and 3rd place in the fly and 1:43.78 in the 100m IM and 4th in the 9/10 age group.

For the ten year old boys Joseph Doyle couldn't match his recent rich vein of form by finishing 4th in the 50m back with 49.21 and 3rd in the 100 IM with 1:48.66. Meanwhile club mate Jack Betteridge (9) swam 43.58 in the free and 2nd in the nine year olds. Jack continued with a brilliant pb of 56.72 in the 50m breaststroke again 2nd. Two more stunning performances in the 50m fly and 100m IM saw Jack take 1st place in the nine year olds with 50.05 and 1:48.67.

Teams made up largely of less experienced swimmers from all four neighbouring clubs Pershore, Evesham, Worcester and Droitwich will be meeting in friendly competition on Saturday evening at Pershore Leisure Centre, spectators always welcome. This marks the start of a new initiative seeing these four clubs working more closely together in trying to offer more swimming time and specialist coaching to each other's members together with long course training at Coventry's 50m pool run by Evesham's and Great Britain's own Jo Deakins who is now Director of Swimming there.

Any young swimmers out there able to swim several lengths confidently please feel free to come along for several free no obligations half hour trials on Tuesday and Thursday evening or by ringing the Pershore Secretary on 07968429112. Leisure Centres in each of the above areas can also put you in touch with the above clubs offering similar arrangements for new members.
