Three rising
young stars from Pershore Swimming Club were selected to represent Worcester
County this weekend in the annual Three Counties Invitation Gala at Stafford
Leisure Centre.
William
Gearey (10), Simon Sweatman (11) and Isabella Woodcock (10) were selected by
Worcester to compete in both individual and relay events against other age
group county champions from Gloucestershire and Staffordshire. It was Gearey and WoodcockÆs first call up by
the County, with Sweatman having competed last year in the same event.
Sweatman took
first place in a dominant performance in the Boys 11 year old 50m fly in a new
pb time of 33.38, moving him up to third in the UK (end of year rankings) and
also came second in the Boys 11 year old 50m backstroke in 35.11 which puts him
seventh in the UK rankings (end of year).
Isabella
Woodcock again proved she is one of the strongest age group breast stroke
swimmers in the Midlands taking first place in the Girls 10 year old breast
stroke, leading from start to finish and winning in a time of 42.03
seconds. Woodcock currently lies 12thin the UK rankings for 50m breast (end of year ranking). Woodcock also helped WorcesterÆs ten year old
Girls medley relay team to victory, putting in a decisive breaststroke that
played a massive part in their win.
Gearey made
it a double win for Worcester County, taking first place in the Boys 10 year
old 50m freestyle in 32.10 and the Boys 10 year old 50m backstroke in 39.78. Gearey also starred in the WorcesterÆs ten
year old 4 x 50m freestyle and 4 x 50m medley relay teams, helping the county
to win maximum points.
Gearey is
currently ranking high in the UK top ten for 10 year old boys (end of year) in
several events including second in the 50m freestyle (30.86 seconds), third in
the 100m freestyle (1.11.93), seventh in the 200m (2.35.50), fourth in the 400m
freestyle (5.23.23) as well as seventh in the 100m backstroke (1.24.22) and
ninth in the 200m backstroke (2.53.19).
Worcester
County eventually ran out overall winners, with Staffordshire second and
Gloucester third.
