Pershore Swimming Club sent an eight-strong squad to compete in the City of Birmingham (COB) Open Meet over the Easter weekend which attracts many of the best age-group swimmers from the Midlands.

Competing against swimmers from much bigger city clubs including Birmingham, Coventry, and Warrington, Pershore produced some excellent times and results winning 3 gold medals, three silver medals and two bronzes.

Alexandra Barry (10) competing in her first COB Open Meet and showing signs of rapid improvement, produced a string of personal bests  across of number of events including the 50m fly (41.58), the 100m back (1.31.15), the 100m IM (1.32.07), the 100m fly (1.40.62), the 400m free (6.14.67) and the 100m free (1.18.49).  Barry also clocked 3.04.50 for the 200m free, 1.52.33 for the 100m breast stroke and 43.45 for the 50m back.

Isobel Cumming (11) opted to swim the longer distance events, producing a new PB time of 11.46.67 for the 800m freestyle with a strong performance.

Charlotte Downey (11), just back from a week’s training camp down in the South West, was also in good form. Downey smashed personal bests in the 50m back (40.26), the 400m free (5.43.00), the 100m free (1.17.90), the 200m breaststroke (3.36.09), the 200m IM (3.10.18), the 50m free (34.99) and the 200m back (3.03.49).

Amelia Gearey (9) another swimmer competing for the first time, produced three good swims with a massive personal best in the 200m backstroke (3.56.60) and clocking 56.93 for the 50m breaststroke.

Older brother William Gearey (11) managed to get amongst the medals in several events and lowered his existing Midland Qualifying Times (MQT).  Gearey won gold medals in the 50m backstroke (35.37 pb) and the 50m free in 29.38 (pb), silver medals in the 100m free (1.04.56 pb) and the 200m IM (2.43.08 pb) and a bronze medal in the 200m breaststroke in 3.07.59 (pb).   He also swam pbs in the 100m fly (1.17.29) and the 200m free (2.24.52).

Patrick Heeks (10) in superb form since the County Championships secured another MQT with a fantastic effort in the 200m back.  Heeks’ time of 2.49.62 (pb) was good enough to grab gold medal and secure his place at the Midlands Championship in Coventry in June.  Heeks also grabbed third place in the 100m fly (1.27.81 pb) and was agonisingly close to another MQT in the 100m free, clocking 1.10.98 and missing the MQT by just 0.18 seconds.

Tamara Marsden (9) was the third debutant for Pershore and managed to bag herself her first medal. Marsden won silver in the 400m freestyle in 7.20.33, knocking 25 seconds off her previous best time.  She also produced new pbs in the 200m breaststroke (4.20.47), the 50m breaststroke (56.84), the 200m IM (3.51.98) and the 50m free (40.64).
