Pershore Swimmers win Gold

There was a hat-trick of gold medals and one meet record for three established swimmers from Pershore Swimming Club in addition to another gold from brand new member Holly at the local Evesham Schools Gala held on 19th April.

Representing various schools in the Evesham area, nine year old yr 5 pupils William Gearey from Harvington School and Tom Bailey from Littleton First School and year 4 pupil Rebecca Philips representing Badsey First School proved too strong for the opposition each winning individual golds in their events.

Tom Bailey powered his way to victory and first place in the Boys Year 5, 25m Breaststroke while Rebecca Phillips (Badsey), in her first schools gala since joining Pershore, easily raced to the gold medal in the Girls Year 4, 25m Breaststroke.

Star performance on the day though went to WilliamGearey, swimming for Harvington school. William smashed the previous Championship record which had stood since 1989 to take gold, recording an impressive 16.29 seconds and personal best to win the Boys Year 4 25m Freestyle. He also anchored the final leg of the Harvington Boys relay team to win his second gold medal of the day, Harvington finishing 4th being their highest position in the gala for some years.

William has had an impressive start to 2012, currently lying fourth in the UK rankings for 50m freestyle for 9 years olds (end of year standings) and also tops the Midlands rankings for 50m backstroke. William joins Pershore's other three young swimmers Tazmin Pugh (12); Simon Sweatman (9) and Isobella Woodcock (9) who are presently ranked 1st or 2nd in at least one event in the whole of the UK individual end of year rankings ranging from approximately 1,000 competitors for the 9 year olds to over 3,000 in the 12 years age group.

This fine record is unprecedented for the club and one all the club and highly qualified and experienced coaching staff are justifiably proud.
