Pershore boys magnificent in victory.

In the most compelling display of excellent swimming Pershore Swimming Clubs 9 and 10 year old boys smashed their own records in racing to victory in last weekend's County Relay Championships.

The first event they competed in was the 4 x 50 freestyle. Swimming the lead off leg was  Jack Betteridge with Tyler Mclean, Drew Jones and Joseph Doyle following.  From these heats they recorded the second quickest time of 2.27.09 going into the finals where they swam slightly slower with 2.28.16 and were pipped into the bronze medal position.                  It was the first medal the club had ever won in the County Relay Championships and proved to the coach Tom Naughton the club is on the right track even with the least swim time available in the county from Wychavon Leisure Management.  Betteridge swam 37.85, Mclean 39.37, Jones 35.66, and Doyle 35.60.

In the afternoon session the four boys had to compete in the 4 x 50 medley events comprising all four strokes with the lead backstroke leg being swum by 10 yr old Doyle (39.03) where he did not allow anyone to get away.  For the breaststroke leg 9 yr old Mclean (47.56) handed over in 2nd place to 10 yr old Jones (43.77) swimming the fly leg magnificently with Betteridge diving in marginally in 3rd place.  Taking over second position at the half way point his last length was the best 25m he had ever swum and slowly but surely opened up a gap of a few inches to get the touch in a combined time of  2.47.48 and the gold medal was theirs.   Betteridges 50m was an incredible 2 sec pb with 37.12.  Swimmers, coach and supporters were estatic whilst the elite clubs of the county looked on aghast.

It was also a day to remember for pb's coming from other members of the club the 9/10 girls also making both finals with 4th being a credible performance with highlight pb's from Tazmin Pugh (10) in the freestyle final with 31.68 and then in the afternoon during the fly leg with 36.00.  Alison Seward also recorded pb's in her free 36.76.  Tessa Carr and Indi Creed-Miles completed the team.

Other unofficial pb's on the day came from Ella Spencer (11)  42.13 back,  Amy Porter (12) a great 2 sec pb in the free with 35.34, with Lizzie Vizard (11), Rhiannon Cordiner (12) Katie Sharratt (12)  completing their team.  The older boys unofficial pb's set were            Angus Jones (12)             Adam Palin (11) a pb of 40.37 in the free and 43.71 in the fly with Harry Sykes (12) 40.31 in the breast with Michael Evans (11) 36.25 in the free  completing the team.  The 11/12 boys team just missing out on the finals finishing in 9th position in the heats in both the freestyle and medley relays.

The Head Coach quoted "Both 9/10 relay teams show that the club have moved on over the last two years and has a strong base to work with. The 9/10 boys worked as a team throughout the day and got the rewards that their hard work deserved"
