Magnificent Seven swim the Severn

Last Sunday whilst twenty swimmers from the club were competing in a grade 2 gala in Wolverhampton another seven from Pershore Swimming Club travelled to Worcester.  They were the first in the Sansome Road baths to help the local Rotary club in their bid to find hundreds of swimmers from around the area to swim the equivalent of the 344 kilometers of the Severn and raise money for a school in Africa.

Having raised nearly £200 for his own school's appeal to help another school appeal in Uganda, ten year old Tyler McLean from Cropthorne with Charlton first school, covered 148 lengths in one hour, a total distance of 3.7 km (approx 2.24 miles).   Eleven year old Drew Jones presently attending St Barnabus Middle School Drakes Broughton, swam 156 lengths in the same time covering 3.9 km.  Fourteen year old Katie Smith also joined the fray and completed 100 lengths in typical determined style in under the hour.

Harry Sykes (13) completed over 150 lengths in just short of the hour whilst eight year old Simon Sweatman who attends Abbey Park first school also completed the same distance in a little over an hour, joined by his father swimming 144 lengths.  Simon will be joined at Abbey Park Middle School by Tazmin Pugh (11) next term and who herself set off at a blistering pace to cover the first 800m in ten minutes settling down eventually to cover a total of 164 lengths in the hour a distance of 4.5 km.

The seven swimmers swam a distance of  25.25 km between them being just over 15 miles giving the remainder of the hundreds of swimmers expected to turn out during the day an excellent start,  Worcester swimming club clocking off the remaining miles in their own session at the pool in the evening in fact getting down to the equivalent distance of Western Super Mare 422km..
