Pershore Swimming Club put in a good performance in Round 2 of the Worcester Winter League, coming a close second behind Orion at Droitwich and beating Bromsgrove and Fox Hollies.  Orion finished on top with 190 points to claim victory, with Pershore just behind on 184 points and both Bromsgrove and Fox Hollies on 170 points.  Pershore and Orion were neck-and-neck throughout the gala which eventually saw Orion just beating Pershore on the relay races at the end.

There were plenty of good individual performances and team relay wins on the night to report, with Pershore claiming ten first places out of the forty events.

First win at the meeting for Pershore went to the 11/u Mixed Medley Relay team, with Amy Weston, Chris Vizard, Isabella Woodcock, Simon Sweatman, Naomi Marsden and William Gearey proving too strong for their rivals, storming home in 1.50.38 and nearly seven seconds ahead of second place Orion.

Weston swam up two age groups in the 100m backstroke and showed good form in the Girls 13/u 100m backstroke winning in 1.22.05.

Another victory soon followed for Pershore with Sweatman dominating the Boys 11/u 50m freestyle and winning easily in 30.30 and proving he is one of the best in the Midlands on current form in this event.  Sweatman then made it a double delight for Pershore, taking first place in the Boys 11/u 50m backstroke in 36.31 seconds and another strong performance.

After the first ten events, Pershore found themselves in second place with 46 points, just behind Orion on 50 points.

Jack Betteridge added more maximum points for Pershore with an excellent victory in the Boys 13/u 100m breast stroke in 1.39.39.  Betteridge stormed to first place nearly 10 seconds ahead of his nearest rival from Fox Hollies.  Jack also saw up two age groups in the Boys 15/u 100m breaststroke and managed a very credible second place against his older rivals and swimming even faster in 1.30.46.

Weston added another first place to her earlier win, taking the Girls 11/u 50m butterfly in 38.71 and Josh Sharratt also took victory in the Boys 11/u 50m butterfly in 40.20.

The Mixed 13/u Medley Relay team of Cassarena Ferriera, Jack Betteridge, Hannah Kenwright, Owen Leeks, Hope Rochelle and Josh Lane put in a dominant performance to take victory by over three seconds in 1.47.95.

After twenty events, Pershore found themselves in third place with Orion and Fox Hollies just two points ahead on 92 points.

Isabella Woodcock, another Pershore swimming who has recently got a MQT, showed her class in the breast stroke with an easy victory in the Girls 11/u 50m Breaststroke in 43.27.  Gearey also took maximum points for Pershore in the Boys in the 11/u 50m Breaststroke in 47.76 seconds.

The final victory for Pershore came in the 11/u mixed freestyle relay, with Marsden, Sharratt, Woodcock, Sweatman, Weston and Chris Vizard taking first place in 1.39.33, leading from the first leg and winning by over five seconds.

There were also good performances by Lizzie Vizard in the Girls 15/u 100m freestyle (1.09.89) and 100m breaststroke (1.28.67), Alex Dobell in the Girls Open 100m butterfly (1.27.04), Owen Leeks in the Boys 13/u 100m fly (1.23.50), Katie Sharratt in the Girls 100m back (1.20.83) and Angus Jones in the Boys 15/u 100m back (1.10.95).  Jake Spencer, just 13, competed in the MenÆs Open butterfly, and put in good time of 1.20.73 seconds.

Tom Naughton, PershoreÆs head coach, commented:  "Another good team performance and a shame to be narrowly beaten into second place.  As one of the smaller clubs in the region, many of our swimmers often swim up one or sometimes two age groups and they are still competitive.  Our older swimmers put in some excellent performances which was particularly pleasing.ö

Ends.
